I had a great crop of raspberries and strawberries this year. Nothing nicer than heading out to the garden and eating the fruit straight off the bushes.
I am thinking of growing this climbing spinach in my flower garden because it has been so ornamental. It now has dark red berries where the pink flowers once were and still deep red stems twined around each other decorated with little heart shaped leaves.
The tomatoes are nearing the end of their season and there are far too many for us to eat - so into bottles they go. Last year I bought the Microwave Bottling book and now I use the microwave technique to preserve them which is simple and quick.
I have climbing spinach in my vege garden. Not only is it edible but really quite attractive. The stems are covered in bundles of pink flowers with the heart shaped leaves just waiting to be picked. I think this would be a great vegetable to plant in a pot to keep on the veranda.
This morning I had fresh raspberries and a strawberry from my garden. Some of the first I've tasted even though there have been many little red fruits on the plants. Now that I've netted the whole section of the vege garden I actually get to eat the fruit before the birds.
It's the same for my peach tree that is covered from top to bottom with the netting. IHowever it's not enough to throw a net over the tree and hope it will deter the birds because they are cunning enough to get in underneath or through a hole where the net doesn't meet. Hence the pegs. Now I have to undo the pegs and climb in through the hole to collect the fruit. A small act of contortion. Just as well the peaches are delicious! |
